  • Mail is distributed daily by ISU Postal and Parcel
  • Faculty members are assigned mailboxes in 2220N Hoover. Ames Lab occupants are assigned a mailbox in their respective Ames Lab building.
  • Ames Lab mail run is provided by the department to deliver mail from Hoover to faculty members’ mailboxes in Ames Lab buildings (Gilman, Spedding, Wilhelm, Metals Development, TASF). It is done MWF during the fall and spring semesters and 2 days/week during the summer.
  • Graduate students on ISU payroll and post docs are assigned a mailbox in 2220N Hoover and are responsible for checking their mail on a regular basis.
  • Mailboxes are updated as needed and at the beginning of each semester to account for students and faculty who join or who are no longer part of the department.

First class mail (USPS)

  1. Insert item in an envelope or box and seal it
  2. Place the mailing address in the middle of the envelope/box
  3. Place the return address in the upper left corner
  4. Fill out a green half sheet – circle mail type (US Mail, Air Mail, Certified, Priority, or Registered), provide account number, give special handling instructions if needed
  5. Submit package and green half sheet to Karen Knight in 2240 Hoover

Campus mail

  1. Place material in envelope (used campus envelopes are located in a cabinet underneath the mailboxes in 2220N Hoover)
  2. Mark envelop with addressee name, office number, and building like this: John Doe 2220 Hoover
  3. Place in “Campus Mail” box in 2220N Hoover.

Express mail services

  1. Insert item in an envelope or box and seal it
  2. Place the mailing address in the middle of the envelope/box
  3. Place the return address in the upper left corner
  4. Fill out a green half sheet – circle mail type (FedEx or UPS), provide account number and business purpose (if mailing on a research account), contents and recipients phone number (required), and give special handling instructions if needed
  5. Submit package and green half sheet to Karen Knight in 2240 Hoover

Deadlines

  • Mail must be submitted to Karen by 10:00 AM to go out the same day
  • Express packages can still ship same day if the 10:00 AM deadline is missed by personally delivering the package to Postal and Parcel in General Services Building by 4:00 PM – must still submit green half sheet to Karen before delivering the package over yourself

Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT)

HAZMAT packages must be verified by Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) by calling them at 294-5359 BEFORE the package is mailed.

Hazardous materials may include:

  • Dry ice (paperwork always required)
  • Plant materials
  • Animal materials
  • Bacteria
  • Biologicals
  • Infectious substances
  • Compressed gases
  • Flammable liquids or solids
  • Corrosives
  • Toxic substances
  • Oxidizers
  • Explosives
  • Spray paint
  • Char

All Hazardous Materials shipments must be delivered to Postal and Parcel Services before 3:30 PM for same-day processing on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. EH&S does not provide service on Tuesdays or Fridays.
