All scanning electron microscopes form black and white images. The image is created by bombarding the stage with electrons and collecting those which come from the sample. An area where more electrons are collected is brighter while an area where fewer are collected is darker. The image is magnified when a smaller area of the sample is scanned and enlarged onto the computer screen.
