Dan Sordelet earned is B.S, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Ceramic Engineering from Iowa State University’s Department of Material Science and Engineering. He began his career with GTE Laboratories in Waltham, MA developing net-shape processing of Si3N4-based structural ceramics. Dan returned to Iowa State as a member of the Ames National Laboratory where he established the Ames Laboratory Plasma Spray Facility. Over the next 18 years, he led programs with quasicrystals and metallic glasses and was instrumental in bringing together advanced processing and characterization efforts with computational methods to gain new insights into the structure and properties of amorphous and nanocrystalline metallic systems. In 2009, Dan joined Caterpillar Inc. and currently has global responsibility for Surface Engineering Technologies including material and process developments with thermal spray and laser-based surface modification techniques.
Sordelet is in his 1st term on the EAC, which ends in 2016.
