Dr. Donald D. Palmer, Jr. Donald Palmer

Dr. Donald D. Palmer, Jr. is a Technical Fellow in Nondestructive Evaluation at Boeing Research and Technology (BR&T) and is based in St. Louis, MO. BR&T is the enterprise research and development organization for the Boeing Company and supports commercial, military, space and other special program areas. He received a B.S. in physics (1985) and an M.S. in metallurgy (1987), both from Iowa State University. He would later receive a doctorate in materials science and engineering from Washington University (St. Louis). Dr. Palmer joined McDonnell Douglas Corporation (later Boeing) in 1987 as a materials and process engineer, supporting both production and advanced aircraft programs. His accomplishments include developing innovative quality assurance testing processes for advanced materials and leading development and implementation of the Mobile Automated Scanner (MAUS) system, a portable, multi-modal nondestructive inspection system used world wide to support manufacturing and depot-level maintenance operations. Dr. Palmer currently leads two enterprise-wide initiatives, one focused on NDE of composite materials and structures and second on NDE for aging aircraft and systems. He twice represented the aerospace industry on a NASA peer review committee and served at the request of the USAF on a panel focused on reducing the inspection burden associated with aircraft maintenance. Dr. Palmer lectures annually at the University of Missouri-Columbia and periodically at Missouri University of Science & Technology and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He holds three patents and has over 50 publications in technical journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Palmer was elected to the Boeing Technical Fellowship as an Associate Fellow in 2001 and a Fellow in 2005. In 2010, he was elected a Fellow of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT).
