Electromagnetic Materials Design and Characterization (EMDC) Group
The purpose of this page is to provide you with an introduction to the Electromagnetic Materials Design and Characterization Group at Iowa State University. We emphasize a strong theoretical foundation, which we use to guide both materials design for particular applications, and rigorous interpretation of experimental measurement for materials characterization. Our logo, above, represents our multiple, complementary, strands in research for materials design and characterization. For example, the dipolar sphere may represent one of many nano-particles for modification of bulk mechanical or electrical properties of a composite material. On the other hand, it may represent a void or inclusion that is a defect in a structural material. Designing polymer-matrix materials with specified properties, characterizing those materials and investigating defects in them are problems of interest to the EMDC group.
