The Materials Science & Engineering Department at Iowa State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Ersan Ustundag as the Glenn Murphy Professor of Engineering. Dr. Ustundag, recently with the California Institute of Technology, will hold the rank of associate professor. He will join MSE in July 2004.

Dr. Ustudag's research focuses on the mechanical behavior of materials by studying their internal stresses through advanced characterization methods such as x-ray and neutron diffraction. His areas of expertise include the micromechanics of composites, internal stresses in bulk metallic glasses and composites, the constitutive behavior of ferroelectrics, and thin film mechanics and solid-state reactions.

Ersan Ustandag received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Turkey's Bogazici University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in materials science and engineering from Cornell University. He was a visiting scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he led a project to design and build the world's first dedicated engineering neutron diffractometer (SMARTS).

Dr. Ustundag has published four books and nearly 80 refereed articles. He is a reviewer for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and other professional journals, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, and the Army Research Office. He has received the NSF CAREER Award and Caltech's Charles Lee Powell Award.
