Glass and Optical Materials Group

Welcome!

Welcome to the Glass and Optical Materials Group; a part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University.

The group is led by Dr. Steve W. Martin and concentrates on the study of the basic properties, glass formations, structures and dynamics of glass systems (i.e. chalcogenide, phosphate, halide systems). The group also studies the ionic transport dependence on glass structure and chemistry for applications such as solid state lithium batteries, hydrogen/oxygen fuel cells and laser optical fibers.

The GOM group is composed of 6-8 graduate and undergraduate students at any given time. Group members have given talks at a wide array of conferences such as the ACerS Glass and Optical Materials Division Meeting and 18th University Conference on Glass. Former ISU GOM students have been awarded the Norbert J. Kreidl Award (Youngsik Kim, 2007).

Please explore the research pages and if you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact Dr. Martin or any one of the group members.
