Research Description

  • Several national and international research programs into the effects of structure on the magnetic properties of materials have been initiated involving other universities, government and industrial research laboratories. This has resulted in collaborations involving several principal investigators at Iowa State University; the University of the Saarland, Germany; the University of Hull, UK; Southwest Research Institute, Texas; the Istituto Elettrotechnico Nazionale in Italy; Allied Signal Corporation in New Jersey; ABB Inc. in North Carolina; Rockwell-Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Company and TRW Inc. in Michigan, and most recently Seagate Technology Inc. in Minneapolis.
  • An international research program with the Fraunhofer Institute at the University of the Saarland was initiated under joint funding from NSF and the Fraunhofer Society. This work was in collaboration with Dr.W.A.Theiner and Prof. W.Arnold. Subsequently this program on stress detection was extended to include computer modeling with Dr.M.J.Sablik of Southwest Research Institute. Meanwhile the inverse effect the generation of stress through magnetization was included as part of the joint effort involving Dr.R.D.Greenough of the University of Hull in England and Dr.R.Weber of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Iowa State University. This included work on advanced energy conversion materials and was recently extended under NATO funding to include Dr.G.Bertotti of the Istituto Elettrotecnico Nazionale in Turin; Italy. Research into laser based processing methods to reduce domain wall energy losses during magnetization was undertaken with Dr.R.Ramanan of ABB Inc. and Prof.P.Molian of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Iowa State University. Research into new types of magnetic substrates for microelectronic power supplies has been undertaken with Mr.D.Mitchell of Rockwell-Collins, and on research new magnetic automotive torque sensors with a consortium of Ford, GM and TRW/Chrysler under support of the US Department of Energy.
  • The magnetics group currently comprises fourteen persons, including four faculty or professional persons, five graduate students, and five undergraduates. There are twelve separate research projects with external sponsors including federal agencies, such as DOE and NSF; industry, such as Westinghouse, McDonnell Douglas and electronics companies such as Asea Brown Boveri, Rockwell-Collins and Seagate; and utilities such as Ontario Hydro and the Electric Power Research Institute,. This research program currently includes two international research projects, with Germany and Italy. A third international collaborative project with the Czech Republic is planned.
