Research Description

  • Since 1966, as a group leader at Ames Laboratory in the area of "Structure of Materials", my research efforts have emphasized the studies of Solidification, Solid-solid Phase Transformation, and Surface Properties. This research program at Ames Laboratory has been supported by the Basic Energy Sciences Division of the Department of Energy.

    For the past several years, the research program has been directed towards the study of solidification microstructures, with an emphasis on the understanding of the solidification phenomenon and on the application of these fundamental principles to materials processing, viz, casting, high speed welding, crystal growth and rapid solidification. This research program includes both theoretical analysis and experimental studies in metallic, ceramic and organic systems. On the theoretical side, the emphasis is placed on the predictions of microstructural scales and phase transitions as a function of solidification processing and materials parameters. The experimental program is specifically designed to elucidate the theory and to obtain critical information needed to further our understanding of the microstructural characteristics of solidified materials. The current program includes experiments on directional solidification and laser processing of materials under terrestrial and microgravity environments.

Teaching

     Courses Taught:
  • Taught a wide range of courses from the freshman level through the advanced graduate level. The area of specialization is thermodymamics and kinetics of phase transformation. The topics covered were broad, ranging from fundamental aspects (e.g., statistical thermodynamics and mathematical methods for materials research) to very practical aspects (e.g., metal casting and welding, and structure and properties of steel).   • Confronted with the need to attract more students to metallurgy courses, a basic materials science and engineering course for undergraduate students in nontechnical areas was proposed and developed.
  • A new undergraduate course on materials processing was developed which has both the lecture and the laboratory parts.
  • New advanced graduate level courses on phase transformations in solids, solidification processing, and mathematical methods in materials research were developed.
