Title: Batteries and Beyond: Developing Electrochemical Systems to Power and Sustain our Future

Abstract: The rise of the lithium-ion battery has impacted the lives of individuals around the world and transformed the scope of modern technology development in many sectors. In my talk I hope to provide fresh perspective on the question of “What is next for batteries and battery science?” First, I will begin my talk by discussing our recent efforts in next-generation batteries by studying the electroplating of metals, including Li, Na, and Mg and the use of this for advanced cell design both with “smart” separators that can sense or mitigate battery failure and the “anode-free” battery configuration that aims toward next-generation cost and performance outcomes. Next, I will introduce my vision of how the batteries of the future will be the system instead of just being connected to the system. I’ll highlight our recent advances in the design of structural materials, such as carbon reinforced composites, into multifunctional Li-ion structural batteries. Last, I will discuss how I see some of the more exciting topics in batteries extending beyond the topic of energy storage in coming years. I’ll highlight this with our recent work illustrating how understanding the mechano-chemical response of batteries can result in a new device that harvests, rather than stores, energy – creating new opportunities at the interface of wearables, big data, and energy systems. I’ll also give a brief into how we’re using our expertise and inspiration for batteries for CO2 capture/conversion and adaptive materials and metamaterials.

Bio: Cary Pint is currently Charles Schafer (Battelle) Chair in Engineering and Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University after joining ISU in January, 2020. Previously, he was on the faculty at Vanderbilt University for almost 8 years, and prior to that worked at Intel Labs, completed a postdoc at UC Berkeley, and completed his Ph.D. at Rice University. Cary has published over 120 journal articles accruing ~ 7000 citations with 16 granted US Patents and is an Associate Editor at Energy Storage Materials, the highest impact journal worldwide devoted to energy storage (IF 16.28). He has also overseen two successful companies from his team and maintains a role as CTO of SkyNano LLC. Among many past honors, Cary is an R&D 100 Award Winner, one of Forbes Magazine “top 30 under 30” disrupters in Science and Innovation, a Kavli Frontiers Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, and named by the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) as “top 20 under 40” talent in academia.
