Title: Cold Sintering and Reflections from ISU, Penn State, and Murata

Abstract: I’d like to inspire everyone by sharing about my career journey. What exactly has been “lasting learning” from my time at ISU, grad school, and the electronics manufacturing industry? Aside from these semi-technical topics, I will talk about cold sintering, a novel way to make composites at pizza baking temperatures instead of 1000 oC.

Bio: Seth graduated from ISU in 2011 (BS MatE). While at ISU, he worked with Prof. Steve W. Martin on mechanical milling and melt-quenching of sulfide glasses for sodium solid electrolytes. After ISU, he moved to Penn State (PhD MSE 2016) where he worked with Prof. Clive A. Randall and Prof. Michael T. Lanagan. This dissertation was the first on cold sintering: Low Temperature Processing of Sulfide and Oxide Lithium Solid Electrolytes to Bridge Ionically Resistive Boundaries. The NSF supported him at ISU (research exchanges at Osaka Prefecture University and Gyeongsang National University) and PSU (Graduate Research Fellowship). Seth is going on 8 y at Murata Manufacturing, a top global electronic components manufacturer whose bread and butter capacitor (MLCC) products have perovskite crystal structures. He has held roles related to materials research, university collaborations, technology marketing for wellness / healthcare / medical and mobility / automotive, new product engineering, and strategy in the US (Pennsylvania and Atlanta) and Japan. He is currently based in Murata’s HQ in Kyoto, Japan.
