Title: Fatigue in Metallic Materials

Abstract: In spite of nearly 200 years of research, the problem of metal fatigue continues to present a substantial challenge to design engineers and materials scientists. Much of the work has gone into testing materials and structures, though there have certainly been substantial efforts toward developing theory and empirical law. Practical application of such methods and recent trends in metal fatigue fundamentals used in industry will be presented here. Recent work in relating strain energy density, stress-strain behavior, and dislocation density to fatigue life will also be presented.

Bio: Peter Huffman received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from Iowa State University in Materials Engineering (2010) and Materials Science (2014), respectively. Huffman currently is a Senior Product Engineer at John Deere’s Moline Technology Innovation Center, doing research and development in the Advanced Materials and Mechanics group. His other research interests include the mechanics of fasteners and bolted joints.
